Yusuf Grillo is widely celebrated as one of Nigeria’s most influential artists. He attended the Nigerian College of Arts, graduating in 1960. As a member of the Zaria Arts Society, Grillo played a role in synthesising indigenous Nigerian themes
Aina Onabolu OBE (1882 – 1963) was a pioneering Nigerian modern arts teacher and painter, most famous for painting portraits. Here he has depicted the Scottish explorer Mungo Park (1771–1806), the first westerner to have recorded travels
Over the next few weeks, we wish to showcase several Nigerian Modernist paintings treated by SGS, in celebration of the @tate Modern exhibition (closing 10th May).
